Simple Script to audit iMacs, Macbooks

I wrote this script a few months back as part of a project.

Purpose:
To gather hardware, software and storage information about the Macintosh machine. It works on all variants of mac from mac OS X. Does not work on Mac OS 9 and below.

Technique:

Simple bash scripting. No rich UI. Easy to run from the terminal.

License:
 GPL

Code:

system_profiler get SPHardwareDataType SPSoftwareDataType SPNetworkDataType SPMemoryDataType SPSerialATADataType > ~/Desktop/macaudit.txt
uname -a >> ~/Desktop/macaudit.txt

Instructions:
Copy and paste the above code and save the file as macaudit.command
When you double click on the file, you will get a txt file named macaudit.txt in your Desktop.
You can also make this user interactive if you require.

Web Application re-engineering essentials

In practice, most of the web development work undertaken in the industry is all about re-engineering and migration of websites to newer technologies.

Some of the Free and Open source Tools that I use are:
1. Grepwin - Synonymous to GUI based Grep
2. Firebug - Lets you analyse the code from the applications.
3. Notepad++ - A simple , lightweight Text Editor (Enable Syntax highlighting and Code Completion Tip)

Free and Open source PDF Reader and annotator

Okular is a universal document viewer and annotator. Okular works on multiple platforms like Linux, Windows, Mac OS X, *BSD, etc.

Okular is very useful especially while annotating notes.

I use it for viewing and annotating my pdf documents and is of great help. A good one in comparison to pdf editors/annotators.

Installation instructions for the windows environment is provided here

Watermarking your photographs

When you publish your photographs online, it is important that you hold copyright of it to avoid misuse.
I found this free and open source software called PhotoScape http://www.photoscape.org/ps/main/index.php pretty useful.

Good places to learn about open source software development

http://makethemove.net/

Make The Move aims to present Linux and open source software as viable alternatives to the system on your computer.

These alternatives are both free (as in price) and free (as in freedom), and put you back in control of your system.

http://www.wlug.org/

The Worcester Linux Users' Group (WLUG) was setup to provide a forum for local users of Linux, a freeware clone of the Unix operating system.
While Linux is, in many cases, equal or superior to commercial Unix and other operating systems, it has no centralized technical support structure. This is actually a positive thing as there are many, many individuals on the Internet willing to help. Many times solutions can be found without much effort by contacting various online Linux sources and newsgroups. There are many Internet resources catering toward Linux users and WLUG was formed to assist Linux users in the Central Massachusetts area by creating a local member support system. WLUG members come from a variety of backgrounds and their Linux experience varies from the advanced to the novice. This mixture creates an enjoyable environment that enhances everyone's enjoyment of using Linux.

I will update this place frequently as and when i come across good links and sources!!!!

Including Graphics in Latex documents-Linux

After hours of surfing i found this to convert any image to eps(Encapsulated Post Script format).

Go to the directory , say

X@X-system:~$convert image.jpg image.esp

image.jpg is the file which is to be converted into .esp format.

Now you can attach the eps figure into the document with ease.

Open source CD Burner equivalent to Nero for Windows

I was surfing the net to find out about the open source CD burning tools for Windows.
I came across infra recorder (http://sourceforge.net/projects/infrarecorder/) . It was really cool. I used it and it was giving me the same results as NERO did.

Really good piece of work!!

compress and convert jpeg to pdf in Linux

I tried to compress a few photographs and mail it as a pdf. i came across a few scripts and i combined them to get what i wanted . Here is the code that i did.

1.cd to the directory where the files to be compressed are kept.
2.Open up a terminal and type in the following code.

for i in *.JPG; do convert -quality 30 -compress jpeg -page A4 $i converted_$i.pdf; done

one can change the quality by 20 or 30 or 40 or 50. Just substitute the number you wanted instead of 30

Hope this is useful
